Dali is a multi-ethnic autonomous prefecture, where various minority groups live in compact communities. The Bais make up the majority.Colorful ethnic customs and habits can be seen everywhere. Unrestrained and frank, people of the yi ethnic group celebrate their new year and other festivals with dage (singing and dancing). The Miaos who are known for their gorgeous costumes can not hold themselves back but begin to dance at the play of the reed-pipe wind instrument no matter where they are, in the fields or on the mountain slopes. Women of the Lisu ethnic group have a good voice and their singing echoes in the mountain valleys. And the Tibetans like dancing and their dance movements resemble soaring eagles. Each of the ethnic groups has its own features is terms of languages. Clothing, music, dances. Customs, and habits.
People of the Bai ethnic group love while color, and their clothing is of lively colors with sharp contrast. They speak the Bai language in everyday life but use Chinese as a current written form. They live in magnificent houses with a series of four courtyards. Each courtyard consists of three two-story buildings with upturned eaves and a system of brackets inserted between columns and crossbeams and a screen in front. They pay special attention to the decoration of their gateways. They have an interesting marriage custom. A man may marry a woman by taking her to his house or going to stay in his-wife-to-be’s home. Guests at the wedding ceremony pinch the bride and burn hot peppers in the nuptial chamber to express their benediction and wish the newlyweds a lifetime intimacy. The Bais are hospitable people. They observe the etiquette of entertaining the guests to three courses of tea -bitter tea, sweet tea, and honey tea. In this way, they express their life philosophy of “first bearing hardships, then enjoying comforts, and finally recollecting fhe flavors.” They believe in Buddhism, Taoism, and Benzhu (Village God). There are many festivals. In addition to those they share with the Han people, they also celebrate their own festivals. These include the Benzhu Festival, Zaiyang (Rice Seedling Transplanting) Fair,Chaohua (Flower Admiration) Fair, Third Month Fair, Torch Festival, Hudie(Butterfly) Fair at which young men and women get together to convey their love by singing and dancing, Shibaoshan Singing Fair, AND Raosanling(Walking Around Three Souls ) Festival. Raosnling is an occasion for the people, men and women, old and young, to sing and dance to their hearts’ content , Known as the carnival of the Bai ethnic group, the festival lasts for three days and nights. |
