The Miao people from the South and Northeast of Yunnan spend their Huashan Festival every year on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month.
The Miao people was said once to be defeated in ancient time and forced to leave their home, which made them think of their ancestors who had suffered from fleeing from home. One year on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, the theophany of their ancestors gave them strength and confidence. They sang , danced and played instruments in a circle round a tree in which there was a flower coming from the heaven. In that year, they got a good harvest.
Since then, the Miao people dress up and plant a flower tree on a mountain on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month every year. They have lots of activities such as antiphonary, dancing to Lusheng(a kind of musical instrument) accompanying, bull fighting, performing Lion Dance and climbing the pole. Among all the activities, the most striking one is Climbing Pole: he who climbs highest will get a award of a pig head and quality alcohol. |
