MAE AI OVERVIEW
Mae Ai is the northernmost district (Amphoe) of Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. The area of Mae Ai was separated from Fang district and made a minor district (King Amphoe) on August 10th, 1967. It was official upgraded to a full district on June 28th, 1973.
The neighboring districts are Fang of Chiang Mai Province, Shan State of Myanmar, Mae Fa Luang, Mueang Chiang Rai and Mae Suai of Chiang Rai Province. The important rivers are the Kok and Fang river.

Thaton Town
The northern most town of Chiang Mai province is 173 from the provincial capital. It lies either side of the Kok River and is usually a transit point for boat trips to Chiang Rai. Route 107 connects it to Fang and continues to Mae Chan, north of Chiang Rai. A white siting Buddha overlooks the town providing a natural photographic panorama. Restaurants are few here and Thaton accommodation is of a simple standard. Few people plan the time to stay here overnight but those who do have the chance to sample tranquil river life-styles of lowland Thai villagers. The northbound road to Burma is not open and there appears no plans to rectify the situation.
The small town of Thaton is linked to Chiang Rai via the Kok river which eventually runs into the Mae Khong at Chiang Saen. This river trip takes around 4 hours and passes many tribal villages en-route.
